Appellate Team member Katrina Smeltzer to be featured in “A Refresher on Jury Instructions,” a continuing legal education (CLE) seminar facilitated by The Missouri Bar

The Missouri Bar will be holding a CLE seminar focusing on jury instructions. The topics that will be covered include a refresher on the Missouri Approved Jury Instructions (“MAI”) for beginners and experienced trial attorneys.  This CLE will cover the basics of the MAI, when to deviate from an approved instruction, and new instructions added to MAI. There will also be an overview of federal court jury instructions when Missouri law applies, and a panel discussion reviewing frequently asked questions.

Katrina Smeltzer, a Sandberg Phoenix shareholder and member of the firm’s Appellate and Complex Litigation Team, will present on “Appellate Issues with Respect to Jury Instructions” and discuss the preservation of error for an appeal, the standards of review the appellate court uses in reviewing issues concerning jury instructions, and the evidentiary support required for jury verdicts when alternative instructions are used.

The CLE will count for 2.0 hours of credit and will be held virtually on June 3, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 2:40 pm, and on August 9, 2022 at the same time. Katrina will be moderating the June 3, 2022 presentation.  More information about this CLE can be found on The Missouri Bar’s website at https://mobarcle.mobar.org/item/2022-refresher-jury-instructions-442566.
