Employers, private and public, take note that a new Illinois statute requires your immediate attention. The Consumer Coverage Disclosure Act, now in effect, requires all employers in Illinois that provide group health insurance coverage to their employees to make specified disclosures annually in writing. Employers must disclose covered benefits so that employees can compare them with the essential health benefits required by the State. The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) enforces the Act. IDOL has details on its website. Penalties are civil and range from $500 for the first offense to $5,000 for a third or subsequent offense depending upon the number of employees.
