Trez is the Practice Group Leader of the Correctional Medicine Industry Team. Trez focuses his legal practice on the consultation and defense of physicians, hospitals and other healthcare providers, with an emphasis on complex mental health cases. Prior to his legal career, Trez worked for more than 10 years in the health care field and since has been involved in the health care industry for over 25 years. Trez is a Registered Nurse with extensive experience in both medical and surgical settings, including interventional radiology, ventilator rehabilitation, corrections medicine, intensive care and neurosurgery intensive care. Trez also served as a Corrections’ Healthcare Administrator during his time in the corrections healthcare arena. In addition to providing direct patient care, he has also been a nursing supervisor, healthcare manager, director of medical/surgical departments and healthcare administrator. Trez serves as the Chair of the Diversity Committee of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel.
Trez was a member of the United States Air Force Reserves for 13 years, where he was commissioned as an Air Force Reserve Officer. Trez is proud to have been selected as The National Black Lawyers Top 100 in 2015. He has also received the NAACP’s 54th Freedom Fund Awards for excellence in law, and is recognized as a Leading Lawyer in the categories of Employment Law: Management, Medical Malpractice Defense Law, and Personal Injury Defense Law: General.
Since graduating from Southern Illinois University Law School in 1985, Rodney has focused his practice on the defense of physicians, hospitals and other health care providers. For his outstanding work in the area of Personal Injury Litigation – Defendants, Rodney has been included in the 2017 Edition of Best Lawyers in America. He is proud to be recognized by his peers with a Martindale-Hubbell “AV” rating.
Rodney has successfully handled more than 100 correctional medicine cases. His correctional medicine trial successes include a 2014 wrongful death defense verdict on behalf of a prison physician and nurse in which the plaintiff sought more than $3 million from the jury.
Practicing law since 1975, John Gilbert brings a wealth of experience representing numerous public and private clients to Sandberg Phoenix’s Edwardsville office. John is a shareholder in the Firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group and focuses his practice on management side labor and employment law, higher education law, as well as civil rights defense for public and private entities.
In 2018, along with Correctional Team Associates, John obtained three defense verdicts in correctional medicine cases in federal court. He is proud to be recognized by his peers with a Martindale-Hubbell “AV” rating.
Dennis serves as the Health Law Practice Group Leader at Sandberg Phoenix. Since graduating from Saint Louis University School of Law, Dennis has accumulated significant experience in litigating a broad range of civil claims, with a focus on the defense of health care providers, including significant trial experience. He also assists health care clients in regulatory and compliance issues, state board disciplinary proceedings and business law needs, primarily the negotiation of contracts between providers and entities. Dennis was recognized by his peers with a Martindale-Hubbell “AV” rating.
Committed to keeping abreast of the latest issues facing his clients, Dennis is enrolled in the University of Missouri’s Health Informatics Master’s Degree program. The proliferation of technology in the medical field has created entirely new legal issues for health care providers, and in many ways changed the landscape of this area of litigation. His ongoing education makes him uniquely qualified to assist in clients in these emerging areas.
Tim Sansone joined Sandberg Phoenix in 2002, leads the firm’s Appellate and Complex Litigation Team, and is Chair of Professional Development. He focuses on complex litigation involving product liability claims, business disputes, appellate practice, and class actions, in addition to serving as coverage counsel. Tim emphasizes proactive case management that is smart, practical, and efficient, and that understands the client’s interests and goals as being paramount. He and his Appellate Team frequently assist trial counsel in protecting the record and preserving any judicial errors for appeal.
Abbey primarily focuses her legal practice on the defense healthcare professionals within correctional institutions in the Federal District Court and in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. She is licensed in Illinois, Missouri, the Southern and Central Districts of Illinois, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Abbey’s concentration on correctional medicine allows her to keep up-to-date on the constant evolution of case law, regulations, administrative directives, and institutional directives specific to each Illinois correctional facility.
Abbey is a graduate of the Southern Illinois University School of Law – Carbondale, where she was a member of the National Appellate Advocacy Moot Court Team and a volunteer in the SIU Legal Self-Help Clinic. She also completed an internship with the Madison County (IL) State’s Attorney’s office and served as a volunteer for the Illinois Innocence Project. Abbey’s range of experience in criminal justice through the viewpoints of both the prosecution and the defense provide a unique perspective into Illinois’ criminal justice system, including its county and state correctional facilities, which allows her to better represent her clients.
Jacob Grimes joined the firm after earning his J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2017 with a concentration in health care law. He earned his B.S. in Biology from Rockhurst University. His areas of practice include the advisement of clients on current healthcare regulatory changes, as well as the defense of healthcare providers against medical malpractice claims and before professional licensing boards. He is licensed to practice law in Missouri and Illinois.
As an associate with the firm since 2011, Larry is a member of the firm’s transportation team and product liability practice group in addition to his work in correctional medicine. He has extensive experience representing local, regional and national clients in the trucking and rail industries throughout the litigation process. He works with transportation clients in all aspects of their business including immediate response investigations after catastrophic accidents, safety policies/training, regulatory compliance and general risk management.
Joining Sandberg Phoenix in 2018, Caleb Hawkins is a member of the firm’s products liability practice group and the Correctional Medicine team. He has extensive experience in representing clients in matters involving products liability, premises liability, and toxic torts. Caleb brings a unique perspective to his correctional medicine work as he previously served as pro bono appointed counsel for inmates, the experience of which he utilizes when crafting and building defensive strategies.
Associate Stephen Lillis joined Sandberg Phoenix in 2018 and is a part of the firm’s Health Law Practice Group. He brings experience in medical malpractice defense, insurance defense, and other aspects of litigation including civil litigation, family law and probate matters. He attended Saint Louis University School of Law, where he also worked in the Community and Economic Development Clinic and also clerked for attorneys in St. Louis with practice specialties in criminal law and personal injury.
Kevin Peek joined Sandberg Phoenix in March of 2018, bringing several years of experience in defending high-exposure medical malpractice claims and defending healthcare providers in the correctional setting. Kevin has presented numerous medical facilities and health care providers throughout the states of Missouri and Illinois. As an associate in the firm’s Health Law Practice Group, Kevin assists in cases involving medical malpractice defense and defense of providers in correctional healthcare. Kevin strives to provide professional and thorough legal services to clients in order to create an appropriate defensive plan, and in an effort to reduce the stress created upon healthcare providers as a result of legal matters.
Crystal Settlemoir offers clients a depth of experience in defending healthcare providers in high-exposure medical malpractice lawsuits. Crystal has defended hospitals and institutions, physicians and physicians’ groups, and nurses and CNAs in a wide array of medical malpractice cases including emergency medicine, nursing negligence, obstetrics/gynecology, and wrongful death, among others. She has also represented providers, physicians and nurses in § 1983 deliberate indifference cases. Crystal is an active member of the Correctional Medicine team and has defended clients through all stages of litigation and to defense verdict at trial in federal court.
Corey A.-T. Stegeman is an Associate with Sandberg Phoenix where he specializes in health law litigation, civil rights, and medical malpractice defense. His practice is focused on representing, counseling, and working closely with clients to defend healthcare providers and corporations in medical malpractice claims as well as constitutional and civil rights claims, specifically Section 1983 claims. Corey is experienced with handling all aspects of litigation including developing legal strategy to defend the case, conducting discovery and depositions, performing legal research, drafting pleadings, as well as motion practice and trial work. He is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis School of Law and he is an active member of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. He is licensed to practice law in Missouri, Illinois, Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia as well as various federal courts including the Southern District of Illinois, Eastern District of Missouri, and Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia. Corey has previously been named as a Super Lawyers Rising Star in the area of Medical Malpractice Defense in Missouri from 2015-2017 and in Virginia from 2013-2014.
Timothy Tevlin brings experience in a wide range of insurance defense, construction and personal injury defense litigation matters to the firm and its clients. Tim’s work is focused on taking each client’s perspective in handling matters. He attended Saint Louis University School of Law, where he also worked as a legal extern at the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri and also clerked for attorneys in St. Charles County with practice specialties in criminal and family law.
Ashley M. Walker is an Associate with Sandberg Phoenix where she specializes in health law litigation, civil rights, and medical malpractice defense. Ashley focuses her practice on representing, counseling, and defending jails, hospitals, healthcare corporations, and medical personnel against complex constitutional and civil rights claims, particularly Section 1983 claims. Licensed in Missouri, Illinois, and federal courts (Southern District of Illinois and Central District of Illinois). Since graduating from St. Louis University School of Law in 2014, Ashley has tried multiple bench and jury trials to verdict in state and federal courts and has achieved favorable results for her clients.
Ashley was recently elected to the Wyman Board of Trustees and is an active member of the Missouri Bar serving on the Young Lawyers Counsel as well as an Associate with the Theodore McMillian American Inn of Court, and the Young Lawyers Division of the Mound City Bar Association. As the Paralegal Manager, he leads and manages the paralegal program in cooperation with the Paralegal Chair and the Benefits Operations Manager, and serves as the senior mentor to other paralegals with the firm. He has earned his Advanced Certification in Legal Project Management. Bob is a member of the Association of Legal Administrators and the St. Louis Paralegal Association, and was that organization’s 2010 “Paralegal of the Year.” He earned his B.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and his Certificate of Paralegal Studies with Academic Honors from St. Louis Community College at Meramec. He serves on the St. Louis Community College Legal Studies Advisory Board and the Paralegal Committee of the Missouri Bar Association. She maintains the RP credential awarded to her since 2011 through the National Federation of Paralegal Associations and actively volunteers with several state and local paralegal professional organizations. Kristy is a member of the Sandberg Phoenix Community Connection and Wellness Committees. She earned her B.A. in Pre-law from Fontbonne University and is a member of the St. Louis Paralegal Association where she attends meetings and furthers her legal education with various CLE programs.
