Associate Meghan E. Lewis joined Sandberg Phoenix Kansas City in 2014 after spending four years at another area law firm. An experienced Business Litigation attorney, Meghan regularly works with insurance carriers, businesses large and small, and business and legal professionals on a variety of legal matters. Her practice areas include insurance coverage defense, contractual disputes, business torts, professional liability, employment law, and appellate practice. She also has experience in personal injury defense and toxic tort cases, including asbestos and diacetyl or “popcorn lung” matters.

Away from her legal career, Meghan volunteers for several area non-profits and enjoys cooking, gardening, and traveling.

Background

Attending the University of Missouri – Columbia, Meghan was featured on the Dean’s list each semester of her undergraduate years and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science in 2006. She stayed in Columbia, going on to attend the University of Missouri School of Law, where she served on the editorial board of the Missouri Law Review and worked as a research assistant. Meghan was also a member of the executive board of the Women’s Law Association and of the Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity. She graduated with her Juris Doctor in 2009.

Staying active in the legal community, Meghan is currently a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City, the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers, and the Missouri and Kansas Bar Associations.

Meghan gives back to the community by serving on the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s Young Friends of Art Steering Committee and as an active member of the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri. She also volunteers for the Kansas City chapter of the Mizzou Alumni Association and is a member of the Mizzou Alumni Association’s Griffiths Leadership Society for Women.

In recognition of her outstanding work as a young attorney, Meghan was selected as a “Rising Star” by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Meghan is licensed to practice law in the states of Missouri and Kansas and before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Missouri, the District of Kansas and the Southern District of Illinois. She is also admitted in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Recent Successes

Meghan obtained summary judgment on behalf of an insurer in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri. The case involved numerous insureds who were involved in a multi-vehicle accident which left one of the claimants paralyzed. After satisfying the limits on policies, summary judgment was granted due to exhaustion.

Meghan recently second chaired a jury trial involving a wrongful death case. Representing the defendant, Meghan helped achieve a verdict that ranked as the 11th largest defense verdict in the state that year.
